This is a Blue Moon – the 2nd Full Moon in a calendar month. So 2026 is a year when we have 13 Full Moons, instead of the usual 12.
A Blue Moon is an extra Full Moon in either a calendar month or a season. Of course Blue Moons are rare, and the origin of the saying “once in a Blue Moon” as while predictable, they only happen every 2 – 3 years. This is because a lunar year is roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, and the gap between them eventually builds up to deliver an extra Full Moon. On very rare occasions, we have 14 Full moons in a solar year, which will next happen in 2037.
Full Moons, when Luna is at her brightest, and her energy at maximum power, are times of culmination and visibility. When the outcome or results of our actions become clearer. With the Moon at her peak our emotions and instincts are heightened, and the veil between the seen and unseen is thin.
After reaching the peak of her illumination, the Moon begins to wane, diminish, and not an ideal time to manifest or start anything new. It is more a time when we are drawn inwards to reflect and release, when we can confirm what is going well in our lives or let go of situations or habits that are hindering our spiritual progress.
A Blue Moon month magnifies and intensifies this energy, as the energy doesn’t fully diminish. It stirs up buried emotions and energetic momentum that invites potent emotional and spiritual growth, as what has completed in our lives comes into the spotlight. And then leads us towards insight that prepares us to make necessary changes or grasp new opportunities ahead.
The first Full Moon illuminates themes, and the second Blue Moon throws further light on how to release, resolve and move forwards.
As this Blue Moon is square the Lunar Nodes, for some of us we may well feel like we have reached a fated turning point, and highlights that recent challenges or changes we have faced could be activated. Issues may re-surface now, so we can uncover the full truth about a situation or finally make a big decision about our future path.
May began with a Scorpio Full Moon that encouraged seeking deeper spiritual enlightenment, and finding a balance between spiritual truth and material reality.
May ends with this Sagittarius Blue Moon that illuminates our spiritual principles, ideals and future path, as it guides us towards seeing and defining what is truly meaningful and sacred to us ahead.
With the Sabian Symbol for this Full Moon being “A Golden Haired Goddess of Opportunity” we are invited to recognise where an opportunity is opening for us, and have the courage to follow our vision.
And what surfaced at the start of May can have felt ongoing, like a three-part play that has spanned the entire month – as a New Moon on May 16th was also a bridge between the 2 Full Moons.
The May 1st Full Moon in Scorpio illuminated the past to reveal the truth of complex emotional challenges, especially in our relationships and finances. Allowed to rise to the surface and emerge to awareness the emotional longing within us for deep connections, loyalty, stability and security. Along with recognition of issues that need to be overcome and adjustments to be made from habitual patterns of behaviour.
The May 16th New Moon in Taurus provided a fertile foundation to anchor the spiritual wisdom illuminated by the May 1st Full Moon, along with our own inner guidance from the spiritual realm.
A lunation that guided us towards healing past emotional wounds, nurturing our relationships, and planting seeds for our future happiness and material security.
Fortified us with emotional strength and courage to navigate through any emotional darkness, as well as encouragement to start cultivating in life what brings us pleasure, contentment and stability.
Now, this Sagittarius Full Moon brings a surge of new ideas and energy to the seeds planted at the New Moon. Stirs up a breakthrough, or release, and illuminates the path ahead. Sparks our imagination, fires up excitement about the future, and supplies momentum to ignite our plans.
The Moon in Sagittarius is ruled by an exalted Jupiter in Cancer, creating a strong mutual reception. Opposite Luna, the Sun in Gemini is ruled by Mercury in Gemini, and visionary planet of innovation Uranus is also in Gemini.
Which energetically combines to invite in inspired ideas, help clarify our thoughts, and light up our vision of the future.
Creates a motivating source of wisdom, love, and inspiration that accelerates our spiritual growth and encourages us to embrace new spiritual perspectives. To take some risks and expand our horizons.
That if a door of opportunity opens, to step through it.
But! With Mars quincunx the Moon, our vision of the future may need some realistic adjustments, as our ideas may still be a little wild, scattered and ungrounded, but are not out of alignment with our future.
Which is where Saturn trine the Moon, gets involved, providing support and the discipline to organise our ideas, and plan out how to bring our vision to reality.
We are being given insight into the future, we now have to plan out how to build it with strong foundations for our future success.
At this Blue Moon we can expect, and are best to focus on:
- Gaining clarity on what has completed
- Discovering the truth about situations
- Releasing what no longer serves us
- Discovering a new vision of the future
- Consciously listening to our inner guidance
- Actively look for new doors opening
- Having the courage to step through new doors
- Taking time to plan and organise our new vision of the future
- Committing to our long-term plans
Love and blessings, X
